Flora London Marathon – New Course Record!

Samuel Wanjiru, the Kenyan Olympic Champion took the gold in this morning’s Flora London Marathon setting a new course record – two hours, five minutes and nine seconds. An incredible average pace of 12.54 miles per hour! By comparison, the average person runs a mile in just over ten minutes 7 seconds less than half of Wanjiru’s average mile which calculates at approximately four minutes forty seven seconds, putting him at over twice as fast the average human!

It was a tense race between Wanjiru and Ethiopian Tsegay Kebede who was hot on his tail for the final three miles of the race as the two Olympians battled it out for Gold. Wanjiru’s desire to win was overwhelming in the London Marathon’s final miles, with each fearful glance over his shoulder assessing Kebede’s position and spurring him on with a new energy to take the first place.

Kebede walked away with silver and a time of 02:05:20 and in third place was Moroccon Jaouad Gharib at 02:05:27. Andy Jones was the first Brit over the line in 13th place at 2:15.20.

British Mara Yamauchi from Oxford took second place out of the women and 20th place overall with a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes and 12 seconds, about a minute behind German Irina Mikitenko who took the women’s Gold in the London Marathon for the second year running with a time of 2:22:11.
